MARCH 2010 - NEWS FLASH

WASHINGTON YOU ARE WARNED...GET READY TO ROCK 'N ROLL
By Karen Semonson, Vivit Board of Directors President

http://www.vivit-worldwide.org/InforumNews/common/KarenSemonson_small.jpg If I had to come up with a moniker for Vivit Worldwide, I would call it smartpeople.com or the best kept secret in the world. A group of talented people who spend their lives focusing on integrating process and technology to run their businesses better. Now in our day, some of us may have been wild, rebellious, and ready to take on the world, but most, more than likely, were polite, intellectually engaged and ready to innovate a new world.

As we get ready for HP Software Universe in June, I am warning Washington to get ready to rock 'n roll because the smart people are coming to town. Washington, D.C., a place where history lives, global directions are orchestrated and present day issues are debated with fervor.

These are the same topics we discuss at Vivit Worldwide, the best kept secret in the world. As a historical presence in the rise of HP Software to market dominance, Vivit understands what it takes for you as practitioners, consultants and sales representatives to compete in organizations. As a non-profit user group dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge for all people around the world, we understand that with diversity comes the uniqueness of thought that each culture lends to our global discussion.  As the economy improves and businesses that have survived stand taller due to the efforts of experts like you, we understand you may need someone to lend a sanity check to your next great strategy, or be a support group around a pressing challenge that may have you politically cornered.

Rock 'n Roll may be rebellious to a young mind searching out their yet unrealized future. For an established professional, Rock 'n Roll may be the next business challenge that is stretching your brain's ability to grasp a new reality. What better way to figure it all out then by heading to Washington with some Bachman Turner Overdrive (BTO) playing Taking Care of Business as our conference anthem. While HP Software has Business Technology Optimization (BTO), a little Taking Care of Business would fit right in with our desire for old fashioned optimism and foot stomping rock 'n roll.

At HP Software Universe in Washington, D.C., a group of established business technologists will be coming together to share their stories - successes, challenges and opportunities - and rock the HP Software world. It's what we do. It's what we were destined to do.

Please enjoy some of the pictures of the talented volunteers who traveled to Hamburg in December to share our community message of Advocacy, Education and Community. Check out the Russian rockers! Vivit will work on opportunities for the community to come together, so that Washington, D.C. in June is where you want to be.

SPOTLIGHT ON VOLUNTEERS

MEET AN OUTSTANDING MEMBER OF THE VIVIT COMMUNITY

StLouisColin Fries is a co-leader of the St. Louis chapter of VIVIT. With his help, the STL chapter leadership coordinated four chapter meetings in 2009. In addition, he assisted in planning and coordinating last November’s 2009 VIVIT Hewlett Packard Midwest Regional Users Group meeting.

Colin first joined VIVIT to take advantage of a training discount offered by one of VIVIT’s training partners, Span Technologies. Through Span Technologies, he learned about the basic and advanced features of QuickTest Professional and used this new-found knowledge to improve and expand his organization’s library of automated test scripts.  Because VIVIT proved valuable for him and others, Colin decided to be a part of the tradition of excellence and join the ranks of volunteers as an independent, impartial chapter leader to support the HP Software community in St. Louis.

Colin has been in Software Quality Assurance for nearly five years and has been involved with HP’s quality assurance tools for the last two of them. He is currently a Quality Assurance Engineer in ESSENCE Group Holdings' Wellinx Division, where HP tools are used on a daily basis.

In addition to being a co-leader in the St. Louis VIVIT Chapter, Colin is also an active member of the St. Louis Quality Assurance Association.  In his free time, he enjoys exercise, music, gardening, scale model aircraft, and watching re-runs of “Arrested Development”.  He is married and has a two year old son.

LAUNCHING THE ITSM BLOG!
By Heather Moore, HP

ITSM BLOG

Roughly a month ago, I set out a plan to create a new IT Service Management blog as a way to interact not only with our community of ITSM experts but with YOU, our customers. People in positions like director of IT Service Management and others have tough decisions to make around topics such as change and configuration management, lifecycle asset tracking, software compliance, virtualization, migrations, upgrades, ITIL, UCMDB, CMS, and more. So we are launching the ITSM blog.  It’s the web companion and direct link into a community of ITSM experts. From YouTube to Facebook, blogging to text messaging, our HP ITSM bloggers will talk about topics like:

  • Pragmatic ITSM: tips and tricks for driving successful IT projects
  • How to kick off 2010 with an IT service desk consolidation project: tips and tricks to making your project a huge success
  • Words from the wise: ITIL expert David Cannon will share his latest knowledge with us.
  • IT financial management fresh air:  a roadmap to deploying a successful ITFM initiative
  • HP Universal CMDB, the Oreo cookie of service asset and configuration management systems: a review from our Practitioners Forum
  • Comply or die: the impact of virtualization on software license compliance
  • When is good good enough? What ITSM bells and whistles are must-have versus nice-to-have: the HP consumer’s guide to ITSM products

We are lucky to have a large team of engaging and experienced ITSM bloggers, David Cannon, Martyn Birchall, David Flesh, Jody Roberts, Chuck Darst, and more. All come from different parts of the ITSM practice and their different perspectives will make for comprehensive and lively commentary.

PRAGMATIC ITIL - OPTIMIZING THE SHORT AND LONG TERM
By Chuck Darst, HP

Regardless of where you have turned, the focus over the past couple of years has been on cost—doing the same or more with fewer resources. Benefits and cost savings associated with IT management process standardization, improvement, and (frequently) consolidation definitely come into play, but these have been balanced by a strong dose of “do it quickly and efficiently.” Reflecting the theme of efficiency, strong consideration has been given to how much is enough versus elegant, more customized processes and supporting technology solutions. And through all of this, how IT shows its value back to the business and users has been more important than ever.

Reflecting the interest in these themes, HP recently hosted a webcast—Pragmatic Approaches to Standardizing IT Service Management—featuring IDC.  Click here to listen to the webcast on demand.  We also invite you to join in on the conversation at www.hp.com/blogs/itsm.    Read more about PRAGMATIC ITIL.
