Vivit Roadshow Events 2019

Posted By Teri Sarallo, 9 hours ago
Updated: Friday, December 6, 2019

In 2019, Vivit launched an Americas Roadshow series to re-engage the local community in some key cities that had not been active in recent years. We sent one of our experienced leaders, Rocky Pisto, ON THE ROAD to reconnect our members in Detroit, Cleveland, Raleigh, and the Washington DC Metro area while Teri Sarallo and Jill Stefan supported our Chicago team. The agendas were duplicated in each city which helped in logistical planning. With the help of Micro Focus marketing, sales, product management, and sales engineering as well as our local leaders or volunteer representatives, we connected over 100 Customers and Partners to learn and share best practices.

If you have never attended a Vivit user group meeting, let us give you the virtual experience as we recap this Roadshow Series. After the introduction of the sponsors/speakers and a high level “What is Vivit” presentation, all attendees are invited to share their name, company, role, Micro Focus tools in use, any issues and recent successes. This opening tends to act like a roundtable discussion and prepares the speakers to address user concerns or to elaborate on the interest areas of the members. After all, these are YOUR meetings!

Some of the highlights included:

  • In-depth roadmap discussions around the ADM and IT Operations solutions from Micro Focus
  • Customers sharing implementations of the Micro Focus tools and feedback on lessons learned at their companies
  • User discussions/feedback around the features needed in future releases
  • Hands-on demonstrations of Robotics Process Automation, an exciting new solution that complements both ADM and IT Operations products
  • Open discussions around support and licensing issues from Micro Focus
  • Deep-dive discussions to understand integration options and direction

And some of the participants feedback included:

  • Jeremiah Key at State Employees Credit Union, “It was a good experience to see the direction Micro Focus is taking, as well as an opportunity to interact with other users.”
  • Richa Talwar, Fidelity Investments. "It would be great to have 1-2 SAME presentations from DIFFERENT users to know what they are doing, challenges they are facing & their unique experiences." Great idea Richa; we will look to do that in future sessions!
  • David Kegley, Prospecta. “Would enjoy more user TRAINING.”

As we look to expand this Roadshow in 2020, we hope you will get more connected with your local user group in 2019. We are here to help you maximize your investment in the Micro Focus tools. And maybe you have some of the answers; user groups are a rewarding way to share your expertise. Find a group in your area here or contact your Local User Group Liaison at Vivit:

Micro Focus Announces the Most Intelligent Enterprise Service Management Product is Now Available as a Service (SaaS)

Posted By Vesna Soraic, Thursday, November 14, 2019
Updated: Tuesday, November 5, 2019

by Vesna Soraic
Senior Product Marketing Manager
Micro Focus

On Monday, November 11, Micro Focus announced that the most intelligent enterprise service management product, SMAX, is now available as a service (SaaS) in the United States and Canada. Read the full press release here.  SMAX is the first application for Enterprise Service Management, ITSM and ITAM built on machine learning and an analytics platform. It offers extensible, out-of-the-box best practices to get up and running quickly. SaaS makes it even faster.

Below are the five most important benefits of SMAX via SaaS for our customers:

  • Subscription-based with minimal initial capital cost, which set SMAX up to become the lowest upfront investment solution among all service management vendors for enterprises. This will further decrease the SMAX TCO.
  • Faster time-to-value from faster implementations and no need to deploy SMAX by yourself. You can start using SMAX out-of-the-box automated processes and build your workflows - codeless - from day one.
  • Versionless with immediate to the latest functionality. Micro Focus will maintain SMAX and upgrade it each quarter so you can always leverage the latest innovations. SMAX configurations are codeless so upgrades of your configurations will be seamless.
  • No vendor lock-in as SMAX is the container-native application with true multi-tenancy capabilities. SMAX customers can easily switch from on-premise to SaaS or public cloud, or vice versa, or simply request to get their tenant data and configurations exported when moving to a third party.
  • AI-driven service management without operational complexity as SMAX SaaS has embedded and configured AI and machine learning into the core of the product. You do not need integrations with third party products and your data is never analyzed by outside products. Smart virtual agent, MAX, which is based on natural language understanding, is also now available in SaaS form.

According to Forrester Wave™: Enterprise Service Management, Q4 2019, in which Micro Focus SMAX has been named a leader, “Micro Focus provides one of the most intelligent service management platforms currently available, including uniquely advanced automated change risk scoring and proactive change optimization suggestions."

The SMAX as a service offering is available with the SMAX Premium Edition which includes ITSM, ITAM and ESM automated processes. Available on a subscription basis, SMAX as a service includes many extra capabilities not available with other vendors.

We are hosting the webinar “What’s New in Service Management Automation” on November 14 in which Michael Pott from product marketing and Doron Orbach from product management will talk about SMAX via SaaS, but also share other news from SMAX and Universal Discovery. If you miss the live webinar, the replay will be immediately available on the BrightTALK channel after the event.

It’s also my pleasure to announce the two new Studio apps available at Micro Focus marketplace:

  • Scheduled maintenance - provides support for the scheduling and creation of Change or Request records.
  • Time tracker application - allows agents to record time spent against specific activities as defined per organizational policies.

Last but not least, we also launched the SMAX Free Trial.  Experience SMAX in a cloud environment and register today for your 15-day free trial.

Vivit Introduces COBOL SIG

Posted By Administration, Thursday, November 14, 2019
Updated: Monday, November 11, 2019

With the onset of the new Enterprise Software Company, Micro Focus, Vivit has the opportunity to grow and serve the legacy Micro Focus customers. One of their flagship product lines includes the 60-year-old COBOL application development language.

To engage these users, and with the help of some key champions, Vivit is introducing a Special Interest Group around COBOL. This COBOL SIG will be lead by our newest Vivit Leader, Jerome Rose with Infosys. Jerome has over 25 years of experience as a mainframe Cobol developer/analyst and more recently as a Business Systems Analyst in a distributed platform. He has interacted with many clients across markets but will share his experience in two key areas; health care and finance. Also, Jerome has the support from key contributors at Micro Focus; Derek Britton, Global Product Director for Application Modernization, Ed Airey, Director Product Marketing and Paula Barker, Marketing Manager.

You might ask, “But is COBOL still relevant?”

Core business applications, often COBOL-based, are the lifeblood of organizations. Thriving in a competitive digital landscape means transforming the systems hosting core business processes. Micro Focus enables this transformation with the lowest cost and risk, through a comprehensive solution across three key pillars of modernization:

  • Application: Extend application value with low-risk innovation. From a modernized, secure web and mobile experience, to process automation, to APIs, web services, and managed code models that support composite application delivery.
  • Process: Match enterprise application delivery speed to today’s required pace of change. Achieve DevOps-ready rapid application understanding, agile development, continuous testing, accelerated delivery, and controlled user access.
  • Infrastructure: Achieve flexibility, security, and cost-efficiency by deploying applications across host, server, Cloud, and mobile, insulating valued IT systems from infrastructure changes while assuring access security, governance, and data protection controls.

The Vivit COBOL SIG will help users with these transformations by sharing best practices in our ongoing webinars. Join us for our first COBOL SIG webinar on Wednesday, November 20th at 12:00 pm CST. Register Now! If you can’t join us live, no worries, still register and you will receive the link to the on-demand recording once it is posted.

On our follow-on webinars, Jerome and others will discuss real-world implementations at such companies as Merck, Emblem Health, State government MMIS/Health and Human Services, Vanguard, HSBC, Morgan Stanley, and Merrill Lynch. He is enthusiastic to share his extensive COBOL experience to help modernize current business applications.

What do we need from you besides joining us on our inaugural webinar? This webinar content may not be relevant to your area of expertise, but we can be fairly certain that for most of you, there are colleagues within your own company that will benefit from this event. Please be sure to share the link with others!

Calling all Future Speakers

Posted By Chris Trimper, Tuesday, September 10, 2019
Updated: Tuesday, September 10, 2019

Many people have difficulty finding their voice or a platform to be heard. Let Vivit help you with your voice and be your platform.

Several years back I became a Vivit member because I was curious about how other people used the now Micro Focus tools in their environment. As time progressed and I networked with other users, I started to discover that I wanted to share more. Through various opportunities with Micro Focus and Vivit, I was able to find my voice and my audience. Since then I have spoken at various Micro Focus related conferences to my peers, several Vivit Local User group meetings and a handful of Vivit managed webinars. One of the most difficult things to do is stand up in front of an audience (of any size) and speak, but once I became comfortable, I found that the benefits of speaking far outweighed the fear. Here are a few that I have experienced:

  • Career advancement
  • Boost confidence
  • Critical thinking
  • Personal development
  • Improve communication skills
  • Make new social connections
  • Personal satisfaction
  • Expand your professional network

But if you are still terrified of walking on a stage and you are just not there yet, this year Vivit is hosting a new event, Virtual Customer Days. We are looking for people to speak/tell their story about using Micro Focus products. The big difference is the format. The content of sessions is pre-recorded video sessions where you can choose to show yourself or just speak with your keyboard and monitor providing the visuals. Each speaker will be doing a live Q/A video session, but no need to be intimidated, these are fun. This format is no different than talking to your favorite aunt or uncle via facetime, only that it is your colleagues and fellow Vivit member.

Let us hear your voice, submit your abstract today for Vivit’s Virtual Customer Days

Local User Group – ‘ALM Octane’ – London - Predictive ALM & Beyond

Posted By Jonathon Wright, Thursday, July 18, 2019
Updated: Friday, July 12, 2019

Directly following on from my previous blog on the EMEA Roadshow in London the announcement of ‘ALM Octane’ local user group (LUG) on the Vivit-Worldwide slack channel #ALMOctane . A few weeks later, we organized to meet at the Micro Focus offices in London to discuss and share our experiences of enterprise adoption of ‘ALM Octane’.

Click the Vlog above for a quick summary of topics explored at the LUG event, along with some bonus follow up material see the [COMING SOON] section.

First, I would like to thank our UK LUG leader, Richard Bishop for organizing the event, then the Micro Focus partners who attended to showcase the art of the possible with ‘ALM Octane’:

  • Tom Millichamp (Edgewords) & Steve Brooker (EOH) – Presentation on “Test Automation with ALM Octane”
    • BDD Cucumber/Selenium/Octane/Jenkins - Webinar Recording
    • UFT/GitHub/Octane/Jenkins - Webinar Part 1 (17 July)
    • UFT/GitHub/Octane/Jenkins - Webinar Part 2 (24 July)
  • Adam Smith (CTO) from Dragonfly – Presentation on “Actionable Insights powered by Artificial Intelligence”
    • Predictive ALM / ALM Octane / ALM.NET / Jenkins / JIRA / Data Visualization / Actionable Insight (Slack / Email) – [COMING SOON]
  • Huw Price (MD) from Curiosity Software – Presentation on “Supercharging ALM Octane to enable Continuous Testing awesomeness”
    • Model-Based Performance / LoadRunner / Test Data Management / RPA / Slack – Webinar Recording
    • Model-Based Testing / TestModeller.io / ALM Octane / LeanFT (Docker) / Data Visualization – [COMING SOON]

Additionally, I would like to also thank the Micro Focus customer success, research & development and product management teams for supporting the event and organizing some additional follow up content – [COMING SOON].

I was lucky enough to be involved with the ‘ALM Octane’ beta programme about 4 years ago, so had direct involvement on some of the feature enhancements such as the GERKIN syntax parser.

I also spoke at conference about the next generation predictive ALM capabilities that ‘ALM Octane’ has planned to release at launch (https://www.slideshare.net/Jonathon_Wright/unicom-agile-methods-designops-hitchhikers-guide-to-next-generation-alm) and I was glad to hear that they are planning to support some of the use cases for Predictive ALM through future integrations with Vertica the Micro Focus Predictive Analytics & Big Data platform.

In the meantime, it was great to see what the Data Scientists at Piccadilly Labs have been working on pulling reference data from ALM, Jenkins, JIRA & GIT to provide Predictive ALM algorithms for example defect triage and automatically identifying the most suitable to provide the fix with over a 70% accuracy rate. Adam Smith also demonstrated the gamification and data visualization techniques to provide goal-driven insights that provide enterprise-grade executive scorecard (cascading KPIs).

After a fantastic practical end to end ‘ALM Octane’ demo from Tom Millichamp a certified Micro Focus trainer from Edgewords, the main discussion quickly focused on sharing experiences of enterprise adoption ‘ALM Octane’ product with the enterprise customers and user community at the event. The main concern raised was around the migration from the traditional ‘ALM.net’ product to ‘ALM Octane’ especially when it came to the investment of automated script repositories stored in the ‘ALM.net’ platform directly.

  • Migration of Test Assets from ‘ALM.net’ to ‘ALM Octane’;
  • Productivity improvements and PPM integration;
  • Leveraging UFT object repositories within LeanFT
    • The conversion process being only one-direction?
    • What will happen with AI-based object identification released this week in UFT 14.53?
    • Default Jenkins node is master and must be manually changed to slave node to support execution of UFT runner.
    • Lack of support for YAML or low-code / no-code to describe tests within pipeline (manually selecting Jenkins plugins)
  • Support for GERKIN execution directly from ‘ALM Octane’ test editor for SDET persona and LeanFT IDE support for Cucumber / Specflow
  • End to end demos featuring a breakdown of each product/capability and persona i.e. Developer, SV as Code, GITOps, CDD and collaboration (Slack/Teams).

The user community plans to follow up with Micro Focus directly on the above-raised concerns around enterprise adoption beyond ‘ALM Octane’ and will hopefully have answers for the next LUG meetup.

In the meantime, why not visit our YouTube channel and hit subscribe, that way you will be able to receive all the [COMING SOON] content mentioned in blog / VLog.

EMEA Roadshow – “Enterprise Adoption – Lifecycle Intelligence (ALI 2.0)”

Posted By Jonathon Wright, Monday, June 24, 2019

This year's World Quality Report states that 43% of users don’t have the right tools for the job, quick caveat, we all also know that is not just tools but culture/people and how we work, i.e, process/methodology.

But for the moment let us focus on the Toolsmith when selecting a new tool. What is one of the most important assessment criteria? How to get data in and more importantly getting it out again? Vendor lock-in is one of the deadly sins of any software provider.

When we talk about getting data out, the first thing that comes to mind is a spreadsheet or a CSV (flat file) from 1972. Thankfully, as we enter 2020 we can now rest assured that Micro Focus has our back when it comes to next-generation Predictive Analytics, that global giants like the Ubers of the world rely on.

I remember when I started out, my go-to reference material was the TestDirector API manual, over 20 years later I still have customers pulling data out of the same data schema for reporting cascading KPI across the business.

This behavior needs to stop, especially when we look at the amazing integrations that Micro Focus provide like support for Grafana, InfluxDB, and Vertica.

This becomes essential when it comes to continuous deployment and delivery (CDD) as well as support for process mining for robotic process automation.

After speaking with Renato Quedas at some lengths from Product Management around the shift from Application Lifecycle Intelligence (ALI) to Micro Focus Connect (MFC) across the product families.

This is excellent news for a global organisation that is looking to adopt enterprise-wide platforms like Octane, which Vivit facilitated the first ever ALM Octane user community during the breakout.

If you are interested in getting involved, the next Vivit Local User Group will be hosted at the Micro Focus offices in London on Monday 8th July between 15:00 to 17:00 GMT or join the live Q&A on our Slack (http://bit.ly/VivitWorldwide) channel on #ALMOctane.

Additional, I’m proud to announce that the Vivit Virtual Customer Days will be shortly announced for October 8th – 10th and the call for submissions are now open (http://bit.ly/VivitVirtualConference).

Before I go, I just wanted to share a few more upcoming product announcements, having previously written a book on Unified Functional Tester the product re-branding came as a bit of a shock.

Personally, I really like the UFT Developer, I had seen this change on a prior roadmap, but cannot quite get my head around UFT One? (unless they have secret plans to support consoles) also Mobile Center to UFT Mobile is really going to confuse people.

The announcement of the rebranding of LoadRunner Enterprise and Cloud from Performance Centre and StormRunner is great and the changes to the user interface look fantastic.

Looking forward to what Micro Focus has in store for us all, as we continue to follow the Micro Focus EMEA Roadshow next month!
