How HP’s ALM Shows Its Dedication to Quality

Bernard P Szymczak, Vivit Ohio Chapter Leader

Anyone who has installed an upgraded version of software knows there are challenges. Will it function like the prior version? Will the hardware requirements change? How long will the installation take? All of these are good questions, but one question tops them all for my company.

Will my existing artifacts transfer over to the upgraded system with minimal data loss?

I use the word minimal here, because it is uncommon in an enterprise class system. No one can really guarantee 100%, usually it is 99.99%. This usually leads to have a one-off not get transferred right and require some manual intervention to correct. Sometimes you need to just recreate the item from scratch.

Then there is the conversion process. How long will that take? How complex is it? What risks are associated with doing this?

A little background here on our environment. We have over 300+ databases and well over a terabyte of file storage in our system. We use on-shore, off-shore and near-shore resources to access the QC/ALM system. QC/ALM is up 24/7 unless we have a scheduled downtime done well in advance for patches and upgrades.

When we upgraded from Quality Center 10 to Application Lifecycle Management 11.52, we experienced something wonderful in terms of data. We lost none of it. Not a single item at all. While we did experience some challenges along the way, none of them concerned losing the data we had in the system. Our Technical Account Manager at HP worked with us every step of the way and got us answers in a timely manner.

As for the upgrade process for each project, it was easy to follow. I was impressed at how accurate the verify/upgrade project steps were. We had a few projects in our system that needed to have some cleanup done (caused by us and not HP). The instructions on what needed to be done in the error logs were descriptive. The result was a quick turnaround on resolution.

In my role, I deal with all the major players in the enterprise class software industry. Most of the time, there are always those little undocumented features that cause an issue here or there. Sometimes those issues cause conversions to become quite the challenge or worse yet data to become misplaced or lost.

This is a testament to how HP has taken a product they acquired. The enhancements HP made were not only the feature set upgrades, but the overall quality of the system. While future upgrades will always present their own unique challenges, I know with high confidence that data loss will not be among them.

Thank you, HP, and keep up the good work.

Westbury Gears Up Analytics Platform for Managing the Business of IT

Posted By Michelle Pivonka, Tuesday, February 17, 2015

SMI 15 Answering the Challenges of Communicating the Value of IT

Burlington, MA, March 1- 2015:  Westbury today announced the availability of its next generation IT Business Analytics platform to help organizations measure, improve and communicate the value of IT. The new SMI Suite delivers a comprehensive platform for automated data integration and IT business analytics that allows IT organizations to easily access and combine any data from any data source without managing and maintaining a complex data warehouse.

Industry analysts predicted some time ago that the transactional view of IT is no longer sufficient for IT organizations to stay relevant. Instead IT should be able to communicate their value by means of metrics and reports the business cares about. Westbury is enabling IT organizations to confront their multifaceted challenges by implementing a robust IT business analytics strategy that turns operational data into business value dashboards.

“Our architecture has been redesigned to industrialize the complete process from access to operational data to analysis,” says Jane Johnson, CEO of Westbury. “Our Customers made significant investments to run their IT operations, but they still couldn’t prove and communicate the value in a way the business would understand it and at an affordable cost. They are ditching the labor intensive and costly data warehouse to use SMI Suite and still get a complete picture of the business.”

Hit the Ground Running

SMI Suite comes with a rich library of pre-built integrations (solutions) and startup reports and dashboards allowing valuable and immediate insight into the role of IT in its organizations’ success.

The new offerings standardize data access from any data source in the enterprise environment providing a comprehensive view of business processes.  The new Suite comes with pre-configured solutions for common HP software products, including HP Service Manager, HP Asset Manager, HP PPM and HP uCMDB. More solutions will be added to the platform in the coming months.

As part of today’s news, Westbury also adopts the IT4IT Open Standard. The IT4IT Open Standard provides vendors, service providers and businesses with a common blueprint to guide all products and solutions for interoperability, compliance and business insight.

The new SMI Suite will be showcased at HDI Conference & Expo, which will take place from March 24-26 in Las Vegas, NV. Westbury also organizes webinars during the month of April to educate customers and partners on the new capabilities.

About Westbury

Founded in 1998, Westbury is a leading provider of business value reporting solutions for IT Organizations and represents enterprise customers around the globe.

Its SMI Suite is an integrated business value reporting platform that transforms data into meaningful information and improves processes and performance across the IT value chain.

Westbury has offices in the Netherlands and Burlington, Massachusetts.

Boost your Business Bottom Line. Learn how DevOps Transformation is the Key.

Posted By Lyndsey Zajac, Tuesday, February 3, 2015
Updated: Wednesday, January 28, 2015

February 24, 2015

12:00 - 1:00 PST (Los Angeles), 3:00 - 4:00 PM EST (New York), 21:00 - 22:00 CET (Frankfurt)

Webinar Title: Is There Really an ‘I’ in a DevOps Team?

The answer is YES! The ‘I’ in team doesn’t represent one single person in the apps development plan, rather it highlights the transformation of the once silo’d teams who support specific functions within the app lifecycle. The straight line of the ‘I’ symbolizes the one team approach that is making DevOps successful. Operations people are showing up in the testing phase of the application and the apps people are doing some measures and monitoring in operations. Recently, TechTarget named DevOps as one of six major data center trends for 2015. DevOps is no longer a new way to think about transformation; it is the ONLY way to bring together the silos that weigh down your business’ bottom line.

This is your chance to converse with the experts.Hear from Damon Edwards,Founder and Managing Partner of DTO Solutions, on the DevOps transformation here (30-minute video). In this informative talk, Damon addresses the most common questions posed about DevOps:

"DevOps sounds great… but how do I go about introducing DevOps to my company?”

This webinar will be your chance to pick the experts’ brains and immerse in DevOps from top to bottom, from strategy to implementation to results.

Our second panelist, Paul Muller, is VP of SW and Chief SW Evangelist at HP. He brings 20 plus years of industry experience and in-depth understanding of DevOps. In this video, he dives into the intricacies of DevOps with a look at "Best of DevOps 2014” and a real world example of implementation. Paul knows how to answer your most challenging questions.

Join our lively panel discussion as we focus on:

  • Common problems in traditional DevOps teams
  • How these teams have changed to truly transform and become innovators
  • How you can apply these ideas to your business to boost your bottom line
  • Your questions!

Check out the HPSW DevOps web page, the infographic and the ebook.

All registered Webinar attendees will be automatically entered in a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift certificate at the end of the Webinar. Two drawings will be held at the end of the Webinar. Winners will be notified via email.

Mathias Traugott
IT Unlimited Switzerland Ltd.
Switzerland Chapter

Mathias Traugott, one of the few Worldwide ITIL Masters and CEO of IT Unlimited Switzerland Ltd. is an IT Governance Expert and a well-known Key-Note Speaker. He started his career in 1986 in the airline industry and acted in several ground operation functions and positions at the Zurich Airport. In the year 2000, Mathias changed roles into the IT Company of the Swiss national airline, Swissair, and built up a new team, which we would name today as major incident management team.

From 2002 until 2008, Mathias built up the ITSM journey at Swisscom Mobile. Swisscom’s journey was well recognized wide over the borders. The integration of the different HP Software solutions, at that time called "Openview", to one IT System & Service Management Suite, was unique.  Especially the real-time business view, gained with BPI created real business value.

Mathias changed roles into an ITSM consulting & education company in Switzerland to spread his wide experience from 2008 until 2012. In 2012, he took the chance to move to the position of CEO at IT Unlimited Switzerland Ltd. to combine his deep ITSM & Governance experience with HP Software. Close the loop is his personal trademark, from takeoff till landing, and always on the way to explore new destinations.

As a Vivit Leader for the Vivit Switzerland Chapter, Mathias serves the HP Software user community.
