For more than a decade he has built his IT Solutions career with a belief in 2 things...

1) User Communities and the collective wisdom it holds...and willingly shares to help its members solve a problem
2) IT Platform offerings' critical need for an Innovation Network of fast-moving 3rd parties' technologies that have the expertise and resources to solve complex and new problems that the Platform could not address in the short-term.

What drives Paul…
In working with IT customers, system integrators and technology providers, I have been amazed at how quickly people innovate when the "core problem” is presented to the "right person”. I sit in awe of how many "long-standing problems” can be permanently and globally fixed when the "right data and right relationships” can be connected. People have said that I have the "heart of IT development” in mind when I engage with business users and IT Operations teams. I believe DevOps is the effort that will pull all of IT together for organizations of all sizes.

What is Vivit DevOps?
(8 min. video) -

My Enterprise IT passions…

For more than a decade, I have built my IT Solutions career with a belief in two things...

What drives me…

In working with IT customers, system integrators and technology providers, I have been amazed at how quickly people innovate when the "core problem” is presented to the "right person”. I sit in awe of how many "long-standing problems” can be permanently and globally fixed when the "right data and right relationships” can be connected. People have said that I have the "heart of IT development” in mind when I engage with business users and IT Operations teams. I believe DevOps is the effort that will pull all of IT together for organizations of all sizes.

What inspires me…

There are organizations that solve bigger problems than IT performance issues. One organization that I love to track, support and talk with is Convoy of Hope. As a disaster relief organization to the US and the world, they have incredible challenges to overcome in short periods of time…and in many cases "while the crisis” is still being played out.

I am inspired by the way Convoy of Hope defines:

The "currency most needed” in the crisis environment…

The existing resources "they have” and who they could trade with to get the "right stuff” to the people in need…

The challenges with distance-to-travel, people-culture, and boarder-crossings that may need to be addressed…

The relationships they need to have and networks of people who could help the most…

The "achievable success goals” and the timeframe for measurement…

And how they set-up repeatable processes for future relief efforts…

It puts my efforts in perspective and inspires me to look at IT problems and fixes differently…

Call for Vivit Advanced Training Classes & Trainers

Posted By Christopher Scharer, Education Chair, Board of Directors, Wednesday, January 11, 2012

Vivit has been successful in providing Vivit Advanced Training classes at HP conferences since 2007. Even with the culmination of the new HP DISCOVER conference last year (which was the largest HP event ever), these classes were still in high demand. Vivit members who offer training are not only helping other members become the "Best and Brightest" in their field(s), but they are also growing their career and resume by offering their expertise through this instructional opportunity.  Once again Vivit is looking for HP practitioners with advanced knowledge and implementation of HP products to provide deep-dive training to our members.

Some practitioners that have provided training in the past (as recently as the HP DISCOVER EMEA event in Vienna, Austria this past November) include:

  • Olli Laiho (Assure) - ALM
  • Mark Tomlinson (Shunra) - Performance Center
  • Chaim Amar & Daniel Klevansky (UniViews) - uCMDB
  • David Van Heusden & Richard Verburg (Westbury) - Service Center/Service Manager

If you are an HP practitioner with advanced knowledge and implementation of HP products, then I look forward to hearing from you and working with you on the Vivit Advanced Training Classes at the 2012 HP DISCOVER conference at the Venetian in Las Vegas on June 4th.

If you are interested in providing a Deep Dive Advanced Training class at the 2012 HP DISCOVER conference in Las Vegas this June or would like more information, please contact Jim Murphy  or myself

Note: This is a call for Vivit Advanced Training Classes (training courses offered by HP Software practitioners prior to the event) and not a Call for Papers (track sessions during the event).

2012 – The Recovery Year for HP?

Posted By Richard Bishop, Board of Directors, Wednesday, January 11, 2012

I'm writing my first blog post for Vivit on the first day of 2012, so it seems appropriate to consider the last 12 months as well as the future for Hewlett Packard from a user-perspective.

HP Discover
Along with other members of the Vivit board, I attended the HP Discover technology conference in Vienna in December. The board uses the opportunity of these twice-yearly conferences in Europe and the US to meet one another and prepare the Vivit strategy, as well as to meet our members and HP executives. The demographics of the two conferences appear to differ slightly. Attendees in Europe tend to come from management backgrounds, whereas those at the Las Vegas event are primarily hands-on practitioners. As a result of this observation, we may tailor our conference meetings and briefings to cater for these different audiences at future conferences. As well as this, we'll arrange follow-up webinars and local meetings for our members who are unable to attend conferences in person.

2011 – ‘Annus Horribilis' for HP
The conference in Vienna came towards the end of a difficult year for HP. Strategy U-turns such as the decision to leave and then re-enter the tablet market, indecision about the future of the PC business, and an unclear cloud strategy all caused concern for HP-watchers. As an HP-software user, I'm concerned at HP's relatively small and declining R&D spend. HP's R&D spend has fallen over recent years and is now approaching 2% of total revenue. This compares unfavourably with key competitors such as IBM, who typically spend around 6% of total revenue on R&D. The last time HP spent as much as IBM (as a percentage of revenue) was in 2002, so in my opinion they need to increase this spend to remain competitive.

Turning the corner
Towards the end of a difficult year, two things that HP seemed to get right in 2011 were the acquisition of Autonomy and the appointment of Meg Whitman as CEO. There was a great deal of talk about both of these events at the Discover conference. The Autonomy acquisition was ground breaking in terms of the amount of money spent (£7.1bn / $11.7bn). Despite this headline grabbing figure, attendees at the conference seemed unaware of what Autonomy means for HP. One of the best summaries that I've seen for Autonomy is from ZDNet. ZDNet describes Autonomy's technology as "the single most effective approach to massive sets of real world information — in other words, the bedrock of much corporate IT and many cloud strategies.” They go on to say that, "There are no other companies like it. It's Google in a suit.” A lack of in-house R&D means that technology such as Autonomy needs to be bought-in rather than developed internally, hopefully this will change.

Meg Whitman has conceded that HP may lose the tag of "world's top PC maker” to Apple in 2012 if tablet computer sales are included in the figures. Despite this apparent setback, she bullishly predicts that HP will be back on top in 2013 on the back of new Windows 8 tablet computers. Source

2012 and beyond
With Whitman at the helm of HP, the company already seems to be heading towards safer waters. In 2011, HP has launched a beta of their cloud service offering based on OpenStack and is reported to be in discussion with Microsoft about providing Azure PaaS from HP data centres. HP posted better than expected results in Q4 and has already announced planned increases in R&D spending as well as a period of stabilisation and a focus on smaller acquisitions of software companies. As well as this, HP is looking to recruit more client managers to look after its clients. Source

All of this suggests (I hope) that HP has turned the corner and is once again in a position to improve its support and product offerings. By continuing to innovate and improve support for existing clients, HP hopes to grow organically rather than by acquisition. This can only be a good thing; hopefully we're witnessing the first green shoots of HP's recovery.

New Vivit Chapter/ SIG Leader - January 2012

Posted By Lyndsey Zajac, Monday, January 9, 2012
Updated: Monday, January 9, 2012

Audra Kutz
Minnesota Chapter - Join Now

I made the unlikely jump from Language Arts Secondary Instructor to the technology industry in 1999. In a matter of weeks I went from teaching Shakespeare to solving Betrieve Error 20 and writing SQL statements. Although I only spent two years as a help desk engineer and software trainer (for a company that went on to become acquired by Microsoft), it was a fantastic foundation for my career in the IT Service Manager industry and my ultimate love of sales (i.e. making friends for a living.) Subsequently, I jump started a fledgling start up consulting company's sales and marketing endeavors in late 2001 and experienced great success as I grew their business year after year until I came aboard for a larger HP partner, Advanced MarketPlace (AMP) in 2009. My past two years at AMP have been spectacular! Our footprint has literally exploded in the Minneapolis/St. Paul region and the true reward is seeing our customer's ecstatic embrace of an HP partner in the region made up of not just developers, but best practice experts, Project Managers who are ITIL certified and intimate with the HP toolset, and consultants with the deepest expertise in existence. AMP's ability to successfully deploy large scale implementations is second to none and I am proud to be affiliated with this professional team. We possess not only experience and industry knowledge, but stand on a belief in integrity that is our trademark. That rare combination keeps our customers coming back and makes me happy to wake up every morning and go to work for such amazing people.

I am excited to be a part of Vivit. User groups play an integral role for our customers and for us. I co-founded an HP Service Manager User Group in St. Paul in 2009 that still meets quarterly today. It's value to the community has been tremendous and I look forward to providing that same value to the Vivit community in the months and years to come!

Vivit Leaders in Action at HP DISCOVER Vienna 2011

Posted By Stephanie Konkoy, Friday, December 9, 2011

A big thank you to all Vivit Leaders who attended HP DISCOVER Vienna and helped with the many Vivit activities throughout the conference. The conference was a big success for the Vivit community. New members, new chapters, new leaders, video interviews, coffee talks, tweets, and webinar content resulted from the conference.

Vivit activities started a day before HP DISCOVER, 28 November, with a Chapter/Special Interest Group Leader meeting and Vivit Advanced Training classes.

We would like to thank all the Leaders who attended the Leader meeting and who instructed the advanced training courses. Your expertise, feedback and insight make Vivit what it is.

That night, we celebrated and presented awards to the Vivit Leader of the Year EMEA 2011, Martijn Stuiver, and the Vivit Champion of the Year EMEA 2011, Paolo Cattolico, at the 1516 Brewing Company at the heart of the city center of Vienna. Congratulations again!

The first day of the conference, 29 November, opened with a bang. The Vivit booth was busy with many members, Leaders, Directors and staff. All were engaged in conversation through the day and night. And yes, we had a wheel to spin for a prize. This time it was a virtual wheel. Very fun! Throughout the conference, many video streamed interviews of Vivit Leaders and Vivit Directors took place along with a Tweetup the first evening.

During lunch the first day of HP DISCOVER, Vivit Leaders hosted round table discussions. The discussions included:

  • Upgrading to HP Quality Center/ALM 11 – Olli Laiho, Product Manager, Assure, Vivit TQA SIG Leader
  • Performance Testing – Richard Bishop, Senior Performance Consultant, Intechnica, Vivit Director and UK Chapter Leader
  • Agile - DevOps and How They Work Together- Paul Peissner, Director, Business Development, CollabNet, Vivit Silicon Valley/San Jose Chapter Leader
  • HP Service Manager OOTB (Out of the Box) a good or bad starting point? – Martijn Stuiver, COO & Floris Verschoor, President –Westbury, Vivit HP Service Management SIG Leaders

On the second day of HP DISCOVER, Leaders and Directors met with EMEA HP Software Marketing to further the interests of the user community.

HP DISCOVER Las Vegas will be here before we know it in June 2012. Many more success stories and fun times to look forward to with Vivit. Hats off to our Vivit Leaders who make Vivit amazing!
