Call for submissions: Share your expertise on HP Software’s technical network

Posted By Phil Nguyen, HP Software Community Director, Wednesday, August 29, 2012
We know the real-world experience of HP Software practitioners is vast. So when a member of our IT Experts community offers to share his practical knowledge in the form of an article or guide, we eagerly accept.

The most recent example is a detailed guide prepared by Celil Çiynekli, a Process & Quality Consultant based in Istanbul, Turkey. In Primus, Optimus, Maximus: Integrating Resource Management for all IT Operations using HP SM & HP PPM, Celil presents three models for managing workloads when IT teams are split between operational tasks like application support and infrastructure support, and project tasks for building or improving a system.

Celil’s guide is an excellent example of the kind of informative and educational content we aim to present in HP Software’s technical network, and we are always interested in helping you to share your expertise with other HP IT practitioners. If you have an idea for an article, guide, video or slide presentation about any of HP Software’s solutions or how to adapt to trends in enterprise software, we want to hear about it!

Please send me an email with any ideas. If we think they are a good fit for other practitioners, we can help get your insights published and shared within the HP IT Experts community!

How Sprint Ran Hard to Manage IT Like a Business: Highlights

Posted By Susan Russel, Thursday, August 9, 2012
Updated: Tuesday, August 14, 2012

"Everything we touch has a direct impact on the brand.” So says John Felton, Director of Service Integration at Sprint. And with the company operating in a highly competitive market, where customer experience is critical to success, it recently moved to run its IT operations like a business.

This is a common objective for many HP customers driving for reduced maintenance costs, increased availability and performance, and faster time to market. But for Sprint the project was particularly challenging. After a period of merger and acquisition it was running an extensive and fragmented IT environment (e.g. 1,300 applications, 64,000 desktops and eight data centers). So how did Sprint achieve its vision to transform operations with integrated service management, improved systems for agents and a single Web interface to access information anywhere on any device? And how did it do it in just nine months? John Felton explains how in his own words in this fascinating webinar – replay –highlights of which are summarized below.

Highlights

Integration is key

The project saw the deployment of a range of integrated HP software including Service Manager, Asset Manager and Business Service Management. To deliver the project John Felton heavily relied on HP’s Premier Support team. His key perspectives on lessons learned and how to make the most of Premier Support include:

  • Stay focused – believing that in a large organisation the longer time is taken to implement, the more changes people suggest that interrupt the flow, John Felton’s team set an aggressive schedule.
  • Get the buy-in early –secure buy-in from the business early and ensure goals are clearly explained. Three checkpoints were constantly referenced by John Felton’s team: is the brand being supported, will the bottom line be improved and will customer service agents have everything they need?
  • Understand the costs – by working with HP’s Premier Support team Sprint accelerated to the point where 35 applications could be removed to secure cost savings faster than anticipated. While using external support has an associated cost, John Felton believes that for Sprint , where an outage can have a huge impact on the business, involving subject matter experts is vital. He says: ‘If you need to get done things that are important to you do everything you can to convince your executive team that this is something that needs to be done.’
  • Call on expertise and meet regularly – Sprint partnered with HP Premier’s Support team to provide a tailored package of assistance and ensured that a harmonised team was created. John Felton says: ‘It was not a case of Sprint Nextel working with HP and HP working with Sprint, it was a collaborative effort.’ The team met twice a week to review progress, objectives and hurdles. He also added: ‘My anxiety went down a lot as I had a direct line to someone who knew Service Manager and our environment if I had a problem.’
  • Request changes if needed – HP’s Premier Support team has frequent contact with HP’s R&D team. Sprint used this feedback loop to request changes that says John Felton "changed the way they may have seen the tool working so that it fitted into our organisation.”

Results highlights

  • Time to market: The project was completed four months ahead of schedule
  • Increased efficiency: Incidents are down by 33 per cent per month, traffic throughput and processing ability are up by 95 per cent and downtime has fallen by 67 percent

Major insurance company case study - HP Diagnostics and HP Software Premier Support

A major U.S. insurance company implemented HP Diagnostics software first within its performance testing environment, and later within its production environment, to drive visibility into events and enable improved analysis and diagnostics. The software, which is backed by HP Software Premier Support, has allowed the insurer to avert major production system outages that would have otherwise impacted its customers and agents, including one issue that a SWAT team was previously unable to resolve after three weeks of trying. Because the HP Diagnostics probe data is stored in a single, centralized repository, it enables not only visibility but transparency, helping prevent "blame games” about events. And because the insurer has deployed HP Diagnostics in both its test and production environments, it can better understand differences between production builds and performance testing builds that affect application performance. Monitoring your servers, storage, databases? But not your applications? Shouldn’t you be?

Yes, all too often, IT departments focus solely on monitoring infrastructure like servers, network devices, and web app servers. But isn’t it equally important to be monitoring your mission-critical applications also? HP would like to help. We can kickstart that oh-so-important activity – with our "APM 360” bundle. APM stands for Application Performance Management and this bundle combines multiple parts of HP’s APM software suite to enable easier ordering, while at the same time allowing you to quickly and easily start monitoring your applications.

One last note! There is currently a promo on this bundle, making this more of a low cost, high value monitoring solution for you. Talk with your HP sales rep/channel partner to see if this might be a fit for you. But hurry, the promo ends September 15, 2012!

Click on the following links to learn more about the four APM products in this bundle: Business Process Monitor (BPM), Real User Monitor (RUM), Diagnostics, and Service Level Manager (SLM). If you have further questions about HP’s APM monitoring products, feel free to contact me at sonja.hickey@hp.com.

You’ve created a great app and thoroughly tested it. Are you REALLY going to throw it over the fence and "hope” for the best?

You’ve developed a rock-solid application. You’ve "kicked the tires” from a Q&A standpoint. Now your application is in production. When you hand off that application to the Ops team, do you know if they are monitoring it? Or does something go wrong and everybody goes into "reactive” mode, meeting in "war rooms” for hours on end to diagnose the problem?

Heck, maybe the "real” problem is associated with the infrastructure supporting the application, yet the finger gets pointed at you?

Stop the madness! Leverage HP’s "APM 360” bundle, which enables your Ops team to quickly and easily start monitoring those mission-critical applications. The bundle combines four HP APM products - Business Process Monitor (BPM), Real User Monitor (RUM), Diagnostics, and Service Level Manager (SLM) – giving Ops insight into every transaction as well as the ability to resolve issues quickly and report application performance based on end-user experience and business metrics. And because HP’s APM products integrate with pre-production, there is a common tool set between development and operations, helping reduce costs.

One last note! There is currently a promo on this bundle, making this more of a low cost, high value monitoring solution for your Ops team. Have them talk with your HP sales rep/channel partner to see if this might be a fit for them. But hurry, the promo ends September 15, 2012!

The Value of "Security Conferences"

Something to think about ... had an interesting topic come up at the OWASP AppSec APAC here in Sydney this last week about the value of security conferences. Now, I enjoy the talks, the comradery, and the community around security conferences as much as the next guy but I'm starting to believe that maybe we're doing it wrong. Read more.

IT training can make the difference between a software system that delivers and one that disappoints

Funding Innovation Through Application Portfolio Management (14 March)

A Live, Interactive Web Event for reallocating IT budgets and retiring applications

Is 40% of our IT budget invested in Innovation? Or are we spending 80% just keeping the lights on?

Most companies spend 80% on their current application portfolio, and only 20% or less on innovation. While we are constantly being asked to, "Do more with less”, rarely are there staff, budget and time available to identify applications that can – and should – be retired.

One of the principle challenges we face is identifying application dependencies: How does one application affect others? What happens if we pull the plug? Another is understanding the applications in our portfolio – what do they really do (and don't), how much do they really cost, and how satisfied are users?

In this Live, Interactive Web Event you'll learn about two powerful tools from HP Software to help resolve the "application bloat” problem: Application Portfolio Management (APM) and, Discovery and Dependency Mapping (DDMA).

HP Application Portfolio Management enables IT to assess and prioritize the portfolio for rationalization and modernization opportunities based on both business goals and IT technology decisions, and then provides ongoing support through business events such as mergers and acquisitions, divestiture, and IT sourcing strategy changes.

HP Discovery and Dependency Mapping automatically and continuously discovers your applications and maps interdependencies from layer application layer to the networking layer and stores this information, minimizing the finger pointing within IT by creating a common view of the services that IT delivers and how the applications & IT infrastructure supports these services.

Accelerate Innovation Through Data Center Automation (15 March)

A Live, Interactive Web Event for running IT Operations at Internet Speed

Many IT organizations may feel that they already have "automation”. In a hybrid cloud world (datacenters + private cloud + public cloud), homegrown scripts and older-generation tools aren't enough – and they won't scale as new applications and services are developed and deployed.

Regain Control & Accelerate Delivery

In this "Live, Interactive Web Event”, you'll learn how HP's Cloud Services and Datacenter Automation solutions establish a flexible operating model for enterprise-wide systems, enabling companies to increase their speed to market, scale instantly, modernize systems, and adopt technologies in a secure, compliant, cost-effective environment.

ICD-10 Compliance (20 March)

The Clock is Ticking: Achieve ICD-10 Compliance -- Now!

A Live, Interactive ICD-10 Web Event from HP Software & ResultsPositive

It's a fact: Payers, Providers, Pharmaceutical companies and Retailers must comply with ICD-10 regulations.

Who can help us do this quickly and correctly?
HP Software & ResultsPositive!

What do I need for ICD-10 compliance?
In addition to software tools that drive significant business value– ensuring that critical compliance dates are met – while controlling costs, you'll need impact and readiness assessment scorecards that deliver real-time visibility into the "ICD-10 compliance readiness” of your business processes, people, vendors, and applications.

Transforming Application Development: Bringing Dev and Test Closer Together (5 April)

Collaboration is the recurring theme in the application lifecycle. In preproduction, Agile methodologies are facilitating collaboration among

development teams, QA, and business analysts. And in production, IT operations (IT ops) teams are collaborating more closely to optimize application monitoring and management practices. So here's the question. Why do so many development teams and IT ops teams still have so little interaction with each other? After all, each has insights that could directly benefit the other. Yet all too often, they don't know how the other team works and they don't communicate well—or at all.

For most companies, there's a two-word answer: "It's complicated.” Developers are still struggling with their own set of challenges (some of which, ironically, have to do with the complexities inherent in Agile development), and IT ops employees are so often overwhelmed with "keep the lights on” tasks they cannot contemplate yet another layer of complexity in their work. However, the opportunities and advantages of increased collaboration between these two groups should far outweigh any short-term inertia—and cloud computing initiatives can serve as the catalyst for bringing development and IT ops together.

This Web Event outlines how companies can begin to integrate traditional development functions with traditional IT operations functions, and thereby create something completely non-traditional: the ability to respond to change quickly and efficiently. Closer cooperation can lead to a smooth flow of information and insights between these teams that results in higher performance, easier-to-manage, easier-to-fix, more cost-efficient, anytime/anywhere IT services.
