Refreshing Insights for Modern COBOL

In its seventh decade, COBOL’s heritage is legendary. This month sees yet another stride forward in COBOL innovation, with the latest release of the Micro Focus Visual COBOL and Enterprise product sets.

But what of its practitioners? Where is the investment? We caught up two new members of the COBOL community, from our recent Graduate Recruitment program, to discuss how and why COBOL still attracts attention everywhere. Meet Giulia Sermann and Jennifer Osborne. Both joined Micro Focus recently as members of the International Region Graduate Recruitment program. Both relative novices in IT, and no pre-conceptions of technology. And both are teaching themselves COBOL as part of their training activities. Read more here.

Tech Tips: COBOL Conversations

Over the last month or so there has been some dramatic questions arising because of challenges faced in New Jersey’s employment COBOL systems. Many of the questions ask quite critically how the state of New Jersey could be still using a sixty-year-old programming language. A more interesting question is perhaps, why are so many companies in the world still using technology that has been around for so long in so many critical systems, and for so many of the financial calculations our modern world depends on? We have all been reading with interest the wide variety of commentary in recent days regarding the programming language COBOL in the middle of the debate. The commentary ranges from bewilderment that it is still so widely used, to bewilderment at those who didn’t realize it was still in use, to those who were amazed at the vast array of everyday transactions reliant on COBOL across a variety of industries. Micro Focus is pleased to share a ZDNet article with included commentary from our own Derek Britton, Product Director, Mainframe Solutions for Micro Focus. With job losses and income plummeting thanks to the coronavirus pandemic we need money as fast as we can, but government systems written in the old COBOL computer language are blocking us from our cash.
